Uganda
Kyambura Hydropower Project
The Kyambura Power Project is a 7.6 MW small hydroelectric power station located in southwestern Uganda. ECL Energy took over this challenging project, navigating a complex landscape of technical, financial, environmental, and social hurdles to deliver a successful and sustainable energy solution.
Key Challenges
- Technical Complexity: The rugged, mountainous terrain surrounding the Kyambura River presented significant engineering and logistical challenges. Constructing a hydropower station in this environment required innovative design solutions to navigate the steep slopes, dense vegetation, and limited access.
- Financial Constraints: The inherent technical complexities of the project, coupled with the associated risks of working in a challenging environment, made securing funding a major obstacle. Potential investors were hesitant due to the perceived high costs and uncertainties involved. ECL Energy needed to demonstrate the project's viability and mitigate potential risks to attract the necessary financial backing.
Our Solution
- Innovative Engineering: We redesigned the project, incorporating a canal around the mountain to overcome the challenging terrain while minimizing environmental impact.
- Equipment Supply: To ensure optimal efficiency and reliability, we provided state-of-the-art, high-quality, fully automated European equipment from a leading European manufacturer.
- Debt Sourcing: We secured a grant from the GETFiT Uganda program and successfully negotiated loan financing from a consortium of Sri Lankan banks.
- Community Engagement: We implemented a comprehensive Resettlement Action Plan, going above and beyond typical resettlement practices to ensure the well-being of project-affected people. This included providing fair compensation, relocation assistance, and livelihood support programs.
The Kyambura Hydropower Project exemplifies ECL Energy’s commitment to delivering sustainable energy solutions that benefit both our clients and the communities we serve. We successfully navigated a complex set of challenges to deliver a project that provides clean energy, supports local communities, and protects the environment.

Uganda
Mahoma Hydropower Project
The Mahoma Power Project is a 2.7 MW small hydroelectric power station situated on the Mahoma River in Uganda's Kabarole region. This greenfield project, developed by ECL Energy, presented a unique set of challenges due to its location within an environmentally sensitive area popular with tourists.
Key Challenges
- Environmental Sensitivity: The project site was located near a major tourist attraction known for its scenic waterfalls and natural beauty. Minimizing environmental impact and preserving the aesthetic value of the area was paramount.
- Stakeholder Management: Balancing the needs of various stakeholders, including local communities, tourism operators, and environmental agencies, required careful planning and engagement.
- Technical Complexity: Designing and constructing a hydropower plant that seamlessly integrated with the natural landscape while ensuring efficient energy generation demanded innovative engineering solutions.
Our Solution
- Environmentally Conscious Design: We conducted extensive environmental impact assessments and designed the project to minimize disturbance to the natural surroundings, preserving the waterfalls and surrounding ecosystem.
- Stakeholder Engagement: We engaged with local communities, tourism operators, land owners and environmental agencies to ensure their concerns were addressed and to foster support for the project.
- Sustainable Construction Practices: We implemented strict environmental controls during construction and operations to minimize disruption and protect the sensitive ecosystem.
The Mahoma Hydropower Project demonstrates ECL Energy’s ability to deliver sustainable energy solutions in environmentally sensitive areas. By prioritizing environmental protection, community engagement, and innovative engineering, we successfully delivered a project that balances energy needs with ecological preservation.
